Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.
Friedrich Nietzche, Beyond Good & Evil

Vaughn still stared at the holographic display. “You want this man killed?” He asked, his voice distant. He tried to bring himself back to the moment but couldn’t pull his eyes away from the image.
“No. You want him killed.”
Vaughn looked up at the man. Silent.
Some Background…
I love science fiction! So, I thought. Why not write a science fiction novel?
That’s where it all started.
I wrote my first draft of Retaliation in 2012 as a steampunk revenge novella. The characters seemed stilted to me so I redrafted it again in November (during NaNoWriMo!). I didn’t like it or the six redrafts after. That’s right, I rewrote this project EIGHT times! I like to think I was discovering my story during those earlier drafts since they’ve helped me understand my characters better.
I love writing my two main characters. They’re flawed people who’ve both done or been through immoral things—heavy things. The difference between them is how they cope with their past. That’s what this story is about I suppose. Learning how to find hope when there isn’t any.
